Exploring Lorne & Surroundings

04/09/2017 05:16:03

Lorne is a great place to base yourself to discover the beautiful Great Ocean Road Region. Here are a few suggestions on drives from Lorne both short and long distance to full day drives touring the Coast and Otways. For further information on places and activities we suggest you visit the providers website direct, pop into the Lorne Information centre for current up to date information. We also advise you to visit Parks Victoria website for current safety, closure and conditions information.

Sheoak Falls - Short morning or afternoon activity
Sheoak Falls is located only a 5 minute drive down the Great Ocean Road from Lorne and is a great afternoon or morning activity. Once you have parked the car there is a short 900m walk to the base of Sheoak falls. it is a relatively easy walk, our kids aged 4 & 6 made it there and back and ended it!

Erskine Falls & Teddy's Lookout - Short morning or afternoon activity
Another great morning or afternoon activity. Erskine falls is a 9km drive from Lorne. Erskine falls is a 30 metre drop into the Erskine River. You will drive into a car park at the top of the falls. It is about a 200m walk (there are stairs) to the first look out. Then there is another short walk and about 200 steep stairs down to the base of Erskine Falls to the lower platform. It sure is a work out getting up all the stairs, I could feel it in my legs the next day! On the way back you can take a small detour along George Street to teddy's Look out. The views over the the Great Ocean Road are amazing. There is a seat and further up near the car park a picnic table, a nice spot for morning or afternoon tea.

Aireys Inlet - Half Day
Aireys Inlet is only a 25 minute drive from Lorne along the Great Ocean Road. Visit the light house, Split Point Light House run tours daily (except christmas day & weather permitting). Children must be over 5. Even if you don't take a tour up the light house, it is great to go and check it out and stroll around the cliff walk and stop off at the tea rooms for tea and scones on the way back to the car. A couple of nice places to stop for lunch in Aireys Inlet are Distillery Creek picnic grounds, there are toilets, no drinking water and no rubbish bins, you will need to take your rubbish back with you. Bark Hutt Reserve Playground is an ideal place for young families. The Aireys Pub is always a great spot for a delish pub meal and a beer or wine, there is a large grassed area outside.
If you are feeling a little more adventurous check out Blazing Saddles Horse Riding. Blazing Saddles offer Pony rides right through to bush and beach rides, bookings essential.

12 Apostles - Full Day
The 12 Apostles are just over a 2 hour drive from Lorne, that is no stops along the way. I have done this trip a few times now when i have had family visiting. We set off early and returned late afternoon. Head off down the Great Ocean Road towards Apollo Bay, taking in the amazing views of the coast. Stop at Apollo Bay (allow an hour from Lorne) for a bite to eat, stretch the legs. Hop back in the car and continue on to the 12 Apostles area, including Loch Ard Gorge, London Bridge. Once you have finished exploring head on to Port Campbell, have a wander through the little town, stop for a bite to eat and head on down to the bay to dip your feet in and relax on the foreshore area. From Port Campbell you can head back to Lorne inland via colac and Dean Marsh, about a 1 hour 45 minute drive. Another activity you could add to this round trip (I have before) would be to stop off at the Otway Fly Tree top Walk. The tree top Walk is located in Lavers Hill, about half an hour past Apollo Bay. They recommend that you allow 1 hour for the tree top walk and 2.5 hours if you are also doing the Zipline.

Otway Fly - Full Day
The Otway Fly Tree top walk is great fun for the whole family. I took my three kids late last year, they enjoyed the adventure. The otway Fly is located in Lavers Hills, a 1.5 hours drive from Lorne. Wye River is a great place to stop off for morning tea, a walk on the beach or a play at the play ground. The Wye River general Store do great food! At the Otway Fly they recommend that you allow 1 hour for the walk or 2.5 hours if you are also including the zip line. Visit their website for up to date information on operating hours, admission costs etc. After a visit at the Otway Fly, if you have kids on board, they will be sure to sleep on the way home!
