Winter Adventures from Lorne

Discover the Magic of the
Otway's

Winter is one of the most spectacular times to visit
Lorne and explore the Great Ocean Road and Otway region. The cooler months
transform the forests into lush green landscapes, waterfalls flow at their most
impressive, and the quieter pace makes it the perfect season to slow down and
reconnect with nature.

Whether you’re seeking a gentle walk to a waterfall, an
adrenaline-filled family adventure, scenic drives, or world-class mountain bike
trails, Lorne is the perfect base for exploring everything the region has to
offer.

Below are some of our favourite winter adventures,
ranging from short outings to full-day explorations.

Please check with the Lorne Visitor Information Centre,
and Parks Victoria for current operating hours, track conditions, closures and
safety information.

Sheoak Falls

Distance from Lorne: 5-minute drive

Activity Length: 1–2 hours

One of the easiest and most rewarding waterfall walks
near Lorne, Sheoak Falls is particularly spectacular during winter when
rainfall brings the waterfall to life.

From the car park, it’s an easy 900-metre walk through
beautiful bushland to the base of the falls. Suitable for most fitness levels,
this is a perfect morning or afternoon outing for families and visitors wanting
a taste of the Otway's without a lengthy hike.

Erskine Falls & Teddy’s Lookout

Distance from Lorne: 15-minute drive

Activity Length: 2–3 hours

No visit to Lorne is complete without seeing the iconic
Erskine Falls. Plunging 30 metres into the Erskine River below, the falls are
especially impressive during winter.

From the car park, it’s a short walk to the upper viewing
platform. Those wanting a closer look can continue down approximately 200
stairs to the lower viewing area, where you’ll experience the full power of the
falls.

On your return, take a short detour to Teddy’s Lookout.
With sweeping views along the Great Ocean Road and the St George River valley,
it’s one of the most photographed locations in the region. Pack a thermos and
enjoy morning tea while soaking in the scenery.

Upper & Lower Kalimna Falls

Distance from Lorne: 10-minute drive

Activity Length: Half Day

The Kalimna Falls walks offer a beautiful journey through
towering eucalypts, lush fern gullies and tranquil creek valleys.

The walk to Lower Kalimna Falls is approximately 6.5
kilometres return and follows a relatively gentle track through the forest.
Although not a large waterfall, the unique ability to walk behind the cascading
water makes it a memorable experience.

Continue a little further to reach Upper Kalimna Falls, a
series of picturesque cascades flowing through the surrounding bushland. The
return walk to Upper Kalimna Falls is approximately 8.5 kilometres and rewards
visitors with some of the Otways’ most peaceful scenery.

Live Wire Park

Distance from Lorne: 5 minutes

Looking for some family fun? Live Wire Park is
Australia’s first completely off-grid elevated adventure park.

Challenge yourself on the high ropes courses, race
through the trees on the Shockwave Zip Coaster, bounce among the treetops on
the Spring Circuit, or simply enjoy a stroll through the canopy walk.

Suitable for both children and adults, it’s an ideal
activity for those looking to combine adventure with the natural beauty of the
Otway's.

Lake Elizabeth

Distance from Lorne: Approximately 1 hour

Nestled deep within the Otway’s, Lake Elizabeth is one of
the region’s hidden gems.

The short walk to the lake is an easy one-kilometre
return journey suitable for most visitors. Keep an eye out for platypus, which
are regularly spotted in the area.

For those wanting to explore further, the Lake Elizabeth
Loop Walk extends around the lake, covering approximately 4.7 kilometres
through towering eucalyptus forest and lush fern gullies.

Forrest Mountain Bike Trails

Distance from Lorne: 45-minute drive

The mountain bike trails around Forrest have earned an
international reputation for good reason. Featuring flowing single-track
trails, technical descents and routes suitable for all skill levels, it’s a
must-visit destination for cycling enthusiasts.

Families can enjoy the pump track and beginner-friendly
areas, while experienced riders can tackle more challenging terrain.

After your ride, reward yourself with lunch or a tasting
paddle at the popular Forrest Brewing Company.

Twelve Apostles & Shipwreck Coast

Distance from Lorne: Approximately 2 hours

Activity Length: Full Day

A drive along the Great Ocean Road to the Twelve Apostles
is one of Victoria’s most iconic day trips.

We recommend leaving Lorne early and allowing plenty of
time to enjoy the journey. Stop in Apollo Bay for coffee and a stroll before
continuing towards the spectacular limestone formations of the Shipwreck Coast.

Highlights include:

Twelve Apostles

Loch Ard Gorge

The Razorback

London Bridge

Port Campbell

Before returning to Lorne, take some time to explore Port
Campbell’s foreshore and enjoy lunch by the bay.

Otway Fly Treetop Adventures

Distance from Lorne: Approximately 1.5 hours

Activity Length: Full Day

One of the most unique ways to experience the Otways is
from above.

The Otway Fly Treetop Walk allows visitors to wander
through the forest canopy high above the ground, offering a completely
different perspective of the ancient rainforest.

Families can enjoy the elevated walkway, while
thrill-seekers may choose to add the Zipline Tour for an unforgettable
adventure through the treetops.

On the drive there, stop in Wye River for coffee,
breakfast, or a stroll along the beach. The Wye River General Store is a
favourite with locals and visitors alike.

After a day exploring the rainforest, chances are the
kids will sleep all the way home!
